In a heart-wrenching incident on Bainbridge Avenue, between East 193rd and 194th streets in the Bronx, NY, a fire on Monday, May 11, 2026, claimed the life of a one-year-old boy and left his 6-year-old twin siblings critically injured. In total, seven people were injured.

FDNY officials believe that doors left open as occupants fled may have helped the fire spread, as has been the case in several recent fires in New York City. Attorney Robert Vilensky of Ronemus & Vilensky is recognized for his work involving open-door fire cases. He has worked with city officials to help hold landlords accountable and advocate for stricter enforcement of self-closing apartment door requirements aimed at preventing the rapid spread of fire and smoke.

“We have several of these fires lately, where the occupants of the apartment have fled the building and left the apartment door open,” FDNY Assistant Chief Malcom Moore said. “That appears to be the case here again, because of the heavy amount of fire found in the hallway upon arrival.”

The children suffered smoke inhalation injuries. EMS rushed them to St. Barnabas Hospital, where the 1-year-old died, according to police.

According to the FDNY, the fire started just before 3:40 p.m. at a six-story apartment. The fire broke out in a second-floor apartment.
