Fire-related fatalities in New York City have surged by more than 60% this year, as per the latest data analysis. The stark increase highlights significant concerns surrounding fire safety across the city.
According to FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Daniel Flynn, 46 people have died as a result of a fire between Jan. 1, 2026 and now.
The figures are tracking close to 2022 and 2023, when e-bike battery fires swept through buildings across the city. By this point in 2022, the city had recorded 47 fire deaths, followed by 48 during the same period in 2023.
The number of fire fatalities declined in 2024, falling to 32 at this time, and dropped even further in 2025. “This time last year, we were at 28,” Flynn said.
But fatalities are now rising again, and according to Flynn, nearly a quarter of this year’s deaths resulted from intentionally set fires.
Additionally, firefighters have continued conducting safety outreach to help prevent future fires and remind residents to keep doors closed during evacuations.
