A devastating fire in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens on Saturday, July 25, has led to the tragic death of one woman and injuries to 24 others. The fire started around 10 a.m. EDT in a home near College Point Boulevard and spread to two adjoining buildings, the New York Fire Department said.
Among those affected by the blaze, nearly two dozen people sustained injuries.
Officials say the fire started on the first floor of a two-story, wood-frame home in a row of five buildings. When firefighters arrived on the scene, two of the buildings were fully engulfed, and flames had extended to a third building, Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods said.
“These buildings in this row of five … they were built in 1930, so they’re all wood,” said Woods.
The fire grew to five alarms, with over 250 firefighters and EMS personnel responding to the scene. It has since been brought under control.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
Officials say the buildings suffered heavy damage, and multiple families have been displaced.
