A single-family home in the Bronx located on Grand Avenue where a fire broke out and killed one person was illegally converted into single-room housing, according to the NYC Department of Buildings. The fire started shortly after 2 p.m. on Friday at the three-story structure.

The FDNY believes the blaze began on the second story and spread to other floors, including the attic. Flames could be seen coming through the roof.

Building inspectors discovered that the single-family home had been illegally converted into 17 single-room occupancy units. The rooms were located on all levels of the house, including the attic and cellar.

The deceased man was discovered in the attic, and a firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Because of extensive fire damage throughout the structure, the Department of Buildings issued a vacate order and ordered the property owner to board the building up.

The American Red Cross assisted at least 10 people who appeared to have lived in the building.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
