Massive Brooklyn Fire Destroys One Building, Damages Two Others

A three-alarm fire broke out on June 4 at 922 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn. The fire destroyed one building and damaged two others. Upon arrival, the New York Fire Department found heavy flames on all three floors of one of the buildings.

A man has been arrested on arson charges related to the fire. According to the FDNY, he was caught on camera buying a bottle of accelerant at a local deli. He then poured the accelerant on the floor of the building and used a cigarette lighter to ignite it before leaving.

“This reckless individual put the lives of residents and responding firefighters at risk when he set this fire,” FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said in a statement. According to the FDNY, the fire caused one building to collapse, prompting the Department of Buildings to issue a demolition order for a neighboring building due to structural concerns.

No residents were injured, but the fire forced over a dozen out of their homes. The Red Cross registered 14 adults and one child for assistance, and other displaced residents were able to relocate themselves.
