A 4-alarm fire broke out inside a six-story apartment building on West 107 th Street and Amsterdam Avenue on Tuesday, December 9, before 8:30 am. Three residents and three firefighters were treated for injuries at area hospitals.
The building was non-fireproof, with flames shooting through the roof and top floor. According to Kevin Woods, Chief of Operations, FDNY, the roof partially collapsed, so they established a collapse zone to prevent anyone from walking beneath that area. “We anticipate further collapse of the cornice,” said Wood.
The fire was heavily involved in three of the four apartments on the top floor.
The Department of Buildings issued a full vacate order due to significant fire damage throughout the structure. The Red Cross is assisting the 34 displaced residents, including four children from 17 households.
Thankfully, no lives were lost, but the families lost everything else.
FDNY fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
